Gran Hotel Bahia Tenerife

9 / 10

Dominating the ocean front at the sheltered and manicured beach of Del Duque in the most exclusive area of Costa Adeje alongside high-end shopping and restaurants.

Style & character

8 / 10

Designed to resemble a traditional Canarian village, complete with mock church towers, plazas and streets, Bahía Del Duque brings contemporary opulence to colonial elegance. The capacious lobby, bedrooms, suites and restaurants are clustered around five swimming pools and extensive landscaped gardens and are linked by walkways and galleries. The effect minimises the 'big hotel' feel but maximises the propensity for getting lost. Some 20 years ago Bahía Del Duque set the bar for Tenerife's luxury market and it remains exclusive; if your name's not on the list, you don't get over the threshold.

Service & facilities

Check-in was a bit slow but otherwise, service was attentive and unobtrusive. The staff wear traditional costume usually reserved for fiesta days - perfect in winter but you have to feel a tad sorry for them in summer.

The rooms and suites of the main hotel are colonial in style with muted tones and luxuriant materials, generous floor space and bespoke furniture. Beds are canopied and there's a small lounge area with easy chairs and coffee table. Every room has either a balcony or terrace, some of them open onto walkways so are not very private. Casas Ducales rooms have a dedicated reception and staff and offer a higher level of comfort and privacy with extra floor space, larger en-suites and Acqua de Parma toiletries. There are also 40 villas with their own private reception and pool area away from the main hotel as well as 24 hour butler service. Each villa is uniquely designed using volcanic stone and wood to good effect and feature a stylish spa bath set into a basalt stone recess.

Food & drink

7 / 10

There are eight restaurants around the resort and these offer dining options from the gourmet Las Aguas to the Chiringuito beach bar. A buffet breakfast is served in El Bernegal restaurant with an excellent selection of cold and hot dishes. Casas Ducales and Las Villas have their own exclusive breakfast venues and an open bar with canapés and cakes which makes for a pleasant venue for a pre-dinner cava. The pool bar is a popular lunchtime venue and features live music.
